Introduction to my life

Hello and welcome to my first blog! My name is Taeam Kang and I will be taking you all on a trip down my life. I first came to the University of Oklahoma to major in Microbiology, Pre-Dental. I enjoyed the field of dentistry and made the effort the past three years to work and get as many shadowing hours and experience as possible. However, this past summer I had a change of heart and changed my major to Pre-Pharmacy in hopes to further my education in pharmacy school. My career goal is to become a head pharmacist for Arrowhead Pharmaceuticals. The reason I decided on Pre-Pharmacy rather than Pre-Dental is my hands strangely shake constantly and I decided it’d be best if I did not choose the hand-on surgery route. It is not a serious condition as one can barely even noticed without staring hard at my hands, but I will entrust the field of dentistry to those more qualified.

I currently live with six of my friends in a house near campus. My family consists of my mother, step-father, and an older sister who attends the University of Oklahoma with me. My family used to have a dog and two lovely cats, but our dog died of old age and we gave our
kitties away to our grandmother, who keeps 12 cats in her home (crazy, I know).

My ultimate life goal is to give back. When I first moved to the U.S. 12 years ago, I was blessed with countless friends and those who wanted to help get myself settled in a new country. Those people continued to help and give and it really helped me open my eyes on what is important. I believe in a society where we can continue to help and bring each other up rather than dividing and blaming each other for all world problems. It is a vision of mine to see that the less capable people in the world, especially in the third-world countries get all the healthcare and medication they need without suffering.

One of my favorite places to be besides my room, is Pagosa Springs, CO. My friend group takes a trip to every Christmas break. I know, it’s just Colorado. However, this place will never be beaten as it is a tradition for our friend group now and we plan on continuing this tradition even after starting our own families one day. It’s just really monumental for our friendship, ok.

Well, I hope this explained the type of person I am a little bit, I’ll see you guys next time!

  1. Hey Taeam!
I absolutely love your vision and passion to give back. I agree, giving back and caring for each other is a great way to build a better world. Excited to know that you're going to do great things in the future! As a pre-physical therapy major, I have looked at ways that I may be able to give back and serve in the future when I am licensed. Companies like Doctors Without Borders provide loving work to many places in the world that need it most. Love that for you! Oh Colorado is so beautiful! So cool that you and your friends have a tradition to go there because not only is that just an amazing friendship thing, but it is a beautiful place to share that time together.
Hope you're continuing to discover a passion for pharmacy and serving others!

  2. Hi Taeam,
I changed my major twice sine I have been at this school. I am not sure who is to blame the university or me? All jokes aside, I am wishing you luck in your next task of earning your degree and qualifications to become a head pharmacist for Arrowhead Pharmaceuticals. Giving back to people is a noble and rare trait and I commend you on that!

  3. Hello Taeam! I'm glad you found a field that you can see yourself in longterm. It's always scary to think about changing majors, but you're ultimately making decisions to make yourself happier based on your interests and abilities, so it'll always be worth it to ask yourself those tough questions. I've changed my major multiple times and finally decided on the field of Public Health and I'm really happy with my decision! This means I also share your passion for expanding healthcare and delivering resources to vulnerable populations.

  4. Hi Taeam!
I absolutely love your passion and that you've found a career field that you're passionate about with a goal to give back. Your outlook on life and your love is so infectious and you seem like you have a genuine heart of gold – I love, love, love that!

  5. Hi, Taeam,
I first came to OU majoring in Biology. I decided to change it to Chemical Biosciences and realized I hate chemistry so finally I settled with Microbiology, Pre-Med. I love the tradition that you set with your friends to go to Pagosa Springs, CO. I haven't been to Colorado personally but it is definitely one of my top destinations to travel either this year or next year. I came to the U.S. about 11 years ago and your goal of giving back inspired me to do the same. I mean I planned to but after reading your introduction, it inspired me more! It it a noble cause.

  6. Hi Taeam, I can see that you are very passionate about what you want to do for a career and I admire that! What is it like living with six of your friends? I can somewhat imagine it because I grew up with like 6 other people in the house but I feel like its probably different with friends. I also love the picture of your cat Ziggy!!

  7. Hi Taeam! I love the vision you have for your career because it aligns with the ideas I have for mine. I want to be able to give back to the less fortunate, which was originally going to be my plan for the previous summer, before COVID-19 stopped any sort of medical mission from happening. Good luck with getting into pharmacy school!

  8. Hi Taeam! This is my first time doing blogging as well, and I actually kind of like it! Living with six other people is a lot, I have never lived with anyone other than my family so I don't think I could do that. I Love to have my dogs around my, I have two, Although I have never had any luck with getting good cats.

  9. Hey Taeam!

I think it's awesome that you decided to change from pre-dent to pre-pharm. Not everyone is willing or will allow themselves to make a decision like that or might be afraid of what people might think if it's something they have always been working towards. I also love how your goal is to give back. That's what I want to do as well! There are so many struggling people in this world, and I want to be able to help change the lives of others as well! I love your vision for a society, and I can't wait to see all that you accomplish!

  10. Taeam, my mother lived in Pagosa once upon a time. I lived in Colorado myself for many years, and my girlfriend lives there now. I understand why you would want to continue going back. It's a beautiful place.

That's awesome you want to give back. I'm sure you have quite the perspective considering you immigrated at an age where you could remember before and after. I like to practice being grateful, and I'm sure it's even better when you've lived in different countries. Good luck in the pharmacy world. Maybe you can fulfill my prescription someday... Or hopefully I won't be needing any.

  11. Hello Taeam!
I myself have some pretty shaky hands, so I can't do miniscule details with many things. I plan on attending med school but have no plans of going into major surgeries like brain surgeries due to my naturally shaky hands. Once upon a time I considered being a pharmacist too, and honestly I still kind of have it in mind to this day. I think being a pharmacist will help you to achieve your hopes for a better society where we help each other, especially if you get the chance to go and help in third-world countries as a pharmacist. And I can understand having that one place that may not seem special to others but is a safe haven for you. My aunt lives in Boerne, Texas and I would probably consider it to be one of my favorite places, aside from at home with my parents, sister, and dogs.

  12. Hi Taeam!
I loved the picture of your cat, I have one dog at home too that I love! Also, I really loved how you said your ultimate goal in life was to give back. I am a premed major myself, and I think similarly when I asses my passions in life. I want to help others and give back in a way I feel I will be most good at, by being a doctor. I think it's really cool that you are from another country and want to give back because others have done the same for you. I hope the pre pharmacy route works out for you! Best of luck!

  13. Hi Taeam! I have a cat myself and a dog who are like my children. Giving back is such a good quality to have! I am a counselor for this camp on campus called Camp Kesem which is a camp for children who's parents have cancer. I think that is really awesome that you are doing your part! I wish you the best of luck with all your studies and can't wait to read your stories!!

  14. Hi Taeam, nice to meet you! Living in a house with six other friends sounds like a lot, but I bet it's really fun. I think it's awesome that you do trips to Colorado with your friends. My mom has a similar tradition, and she still goes to Colorado with her college friends most summers. I love Colrado too—my grandparents live in Evergreen, my friend has a house in Aspen, and my boyfriend's family has a house near Salida, so I'm there at least a couple times a year!

  15. Hi Taeam! What a cool journey! I don't think there's anything wrong with changing your major, especially since you seem to have such a clear vision of what you want to do in the future for pharmacy! I also admire your life goal of giving back to others--it's such a beautiful sentiment. I've never been to Colorado before, but that sounds like a lovely place! That's so cool that you have an annual tradition of visiting it with your friends!

  16. It is so fun meeting people the SECOND time, Taeam! This time I can connect your story with someone I know, not just a name on the class roster. :-)
And of course now more than ever people have total respect for the world of pharmacies and the crucial role they play in public health; I hoping to be able to schedule a COVID vaccination at my local Walgreens when my group becomes eligible (which will be soon; I live in North Carolina which is behind Oklahoma right now in vaccinations, but even here we are making big progress!). Just seeing so many of my friends and family able to get vaccinated in these past weeks has given me so much optimism for the future again (my husband got his second shot yesterday!), and now I hope people in the future will appreciate even more the incredible role that healthcare professionals play in the world, keeping us healthy and safe. Plus maybe maybe maybe soon we can start traveling again, so I hope you will get to go back to Pagosa Springs soon!

  17. Hi Taeam,
It was great getting to read a bit about you! I think it is perfectly okay to change your major as many times as necessary. It is so difficult to choose a life path when we are just 18. I changed my major 3 times before I settled on Advertising, and I am still unsure that I was right in picking that. I think it is really important to choose career path that you are passionate about, and i see that you are truly passionate about helping those less fortunate. Everyone should have access to healthcare!
I look forward to learning more about you through your stories the rest of this semester!

  18. Hey Taeam,
It was really nice getting to learn little bit about you! Changing your major is no big deal at all so don't let that get to you, especially since you are staying I the same general field! At least you aren't changing from Pre-Dental to something like History!!!! Also, your reason from changing your major is a very noble and selfless one, many people would simply ignore such a seemingly small issue for their own personal gain. Thank you for also staying true to yourself and your passions even when adversity comes!

    1. Hey Taeam,
I just finished reading through another of yours stories, in week 12, and wanted to drop back by and say that I am very impressed by how well your writing is progressing this semester! Hoping the semester continues well and that you manage to finish strong!

  19. Hi Taeam!
We have already met before but it was nice to read about you in your introduction! That is so cool that you are going to pharmacy school, I wish you the best with that! It is also super sad that your dog died but at least you still have two cats! I have a cat that looks like the one you posted but she acts more like a dog that a cat. Anyway, good luck with the rest of your semester!!

  20. Hey Taeam,
Nice to meet you! This was a really nice introduction I feel like I know a lot about you. I am a pre-dentistry major but I'm majoring in biology not microbiology. I m glad you came to find out that pharmacy is what you'll like to do its a nice line of work. I definitely want to take a trip t Colorado soon that sounds nice, I've never been to Pagosa ill add that to the list.

  21. Howdy Taeam!
You've managed to pack quite a bit of information into your introduction for how concise it is! I can definitely relate to loving Colorado. I've never been in the winter, but my family tries to get up to Rocky Mountain National Park every summer we get the chance. It's a wonderful place and in my opinion there's nowhere in the US quite like it. Best of luck the rest of your semester and with your pre-pharmacy goals!

  22. Hi Taeam!
It’s nice to meet you! Shaky hands probably does mean that you should avoid doing surgery! My grandmother does not have any cats or kittens, although she does breed dogs, so there are always puppies around her house. Having a set trip for your friend group that you will continue with your own families one day is really cool!

  23. Hi Taeam! The picture of your cat is hilarious — he looks so dapper! 12 cats is a lot to take care of, but I'm sure your grandmother loves them all. I think your goal to give back is commendable, and it's something I hope to achieve too! I wish you well with the rest of the semester, and getting to your goals!

  24. Hi Taeam! First of all I would like to say your cat is adorable! I have two dogs and my husband refuses to get a cat even though I love them. My childhood pet was a cat, so I am jealous! However, I love my dogs just as much :) . I am sorry about your hands, but you seem to have found peace with your decision. We definitely need great pharmacists though! My grandfather was the pharmacist for the town he lived in and people always came in to talk to him. It is a very personable job! Best of luck to you as the semester comes to an end.

  25. Hey Taeam!
I have a friend in OU pharmacy right now! Best of luck he always tells me it's pretty tough! I never had any pets as a kid so I'm kind of jealous of you with your cats and dog! Sadly, I'm super allergic to cats so I'll never be able to have one. Your the last introduction I'll be reading this semester! I hope you had a good semester and good luck in pharmacy school!
